Definition of BLDC Motor


The BLDC motor is composed of a motor body and a driver and is a typical electromechanical integration product. Brushless motor refers to a motor without brushes and commutator (or collector ring), also known as commutator-less motor. As early as the birth of the motor in the 19th century, the practical motor produced was the brushless form, that is, the AC squirrel cage asynchronous motor, which has been widely used. However, asynchronous motors have many insurmountable defects, resulting in slow development of motor technology. The transistor was born in the middle of the last century, so the brushless DC motor using a transistor commutation circuit instead of brushes and commutators came into being. This new brushless motor is called an electronically commutated DC motor, and it overcomes the shortcomings of the first generation brushless motors.

How BLDC Motors Work


The brushless DC motor is composed of a motor body and a driver and is a typical electromechanical integration product. The stator winding of the motor is mostly made into a three-phase symmetrical star connection, which is very similar to the three-phase asynchronous motor. There are magnetized permanent magnets stuck on the rotor of the motor. In order to detect the polarity of the motor rotor, a position sensor is installed in the motor. The driver is composed of power electronic devices and integrated circuits. Its function is: to receive the start, stop, and braking signals of the motor to control the starting, stopping, and braking of the motor; to receive position sensor signals and forward and reverse rotation signals to control the reverse direction. The power tubes of the variable bridge are turned on and off to generate continuous torque; it receives speed commands and speed feedback signals to control and adjust the speed; it provides protection and display, etc.

DC motors have fast response, large starting torque, and the ability to provide rated torque from zero speed to rated speed. However, the advantages of DC motors are also its shortcomings, because DC motors must produce constant rotation under rated load. To achieve torque performance, the armature magnetic field and the rotor magnetic field must be constantly maintained at 90°, which requires carbon brushes and commutators. The carbon brushes and commutator will produce sparks and carbon powder when the motor rotates. In addition to causing damage to the components, the use occasions are also limited. AC motors have no carbon brushes and commutators and are maintenance-free, sturdy, and widely used. However, in terms of characteristics, complex control technology is required to achieve performance equivalent to that of DC motors. Nowadays, semiconductors are developing rapidly, and the switching frequency of power components is much faster, improving the performance of drive motors. The speed of microprocessors is getting faster and faster, and it is possible to control the AC motor in a rotating two-axis Cartesian coordinate system, appropriately control the current components of the AC motor in the two axes, and achieve similar DC motor control and performance comparable to that of a DC motor. performance.
